We chat with wanderlust queen & self-taught photographer Bliss Katherine in the high desert of Marfa, TX.
When and why did you start pursuing photography/blogging?
At age fourteen I had my own film camera my father gave me and haven’t stopped creating since. I lived in a small beach town so my free time looked like listening to old music, thrifting and looking at photography books. I loved fashion magazines as a teen and gained heavy inspiration from them, marveling at editorial color pallets. My fashion opportunities started at sixteen and shortly after I was filled with an obsession like no other. By age seventeen my photographs were featured in magazines, on book covers, and in bands album art. I collected vintage clothing like wide brim hats, lace dresses, and shag coats. I’ve always loved sharing my photography and outfits with the world, now I do it all for a living and am so grateful.
Tell us something interesting about Marfa!
It was a random getaway I always wanted to go on. Myself, husband and friends road-tripped there and got a big house for the weekend. I’d say the most interesting thing to me was how much of a ghost town it is! Not many people live there so daily we continuously saw the same people over and over. Rather awkward, but it was definitely interesting. I may or may not have felt like I was in the Truman Show. Altogether it was a really beautiful trip and the shopping was dreamy!
Where’s your favorite place to travel and why?
It’s always a tie between mountains and deserts! I feel most at ease when I’m under all of the stars and can hear coyotes howling, or sitting on a cabin porch looking at pine trees. Those places reset my heart and mind in a way, and in a way I can come back to feeling most inspired and refreshed. I grew up traveling a bit with my mother and father and was taught to adventure, so my youthful freedom is at it’s best in the wild.
Jane Birkin vs. Brigitte Bardot?
Tough, but Birkin. She wins the effortlessly cool award. That photo of her in a turtleneck sweater on a motorcycle changed my life.
