Take an exclusive peek behind the scenes at our Fall 2019 collection with designers Gloria K. and Natalie B.
Alright friends, if the 4th of July is the peak of summer, that means it's all down hill from here. The sun may still be beating down upon us, but we're already hungry for that big back-to-school energy (even if you've been out of school for a decade). Enter: our Fall '19 collection. Comin' in hot and refreshing like a venti iced PSL (extra ice), this season is something you can really have some fun with. Exciting new trends arrive just in time like a breath of crisp autumn air: western details (yee-haw!), animal prints (meow!), and textural knits (so fuzzy!) just to name a few. We took a moment with our BB DAKOTA and JACK designers to discuss the inspiration behind the line. Scroll on to read the Q&A!
Can you tell us a little bit about where you like to look for inspiration when designing a new collection?
GK: For inspo, of course I look to bloggers and influencers, but I love people watching to see what real people are actually wearing.
NB: Social media is quickly becoming a great asset in the fashion world. Store fronts in New York, Los Angeles and Paris are great resources for color, print and fabric direction. Having the ability to touch new fabrics, review new construction approaches and really narrow down trim direction is key to staying up to date on the latest trends. A lot of my muse inspiration comes from my Pins. What is this girl doing and where will she be wearing this. It helps paint the picture and kick off the entire design process.
How is designing for Fall unique compared to other seasons?
GK: Fall being a transitional season means lots of layers. And I think it goes without saying that more layers means more to play with. With Fall you get to design and play with different textures and fabrics like leathers, furs, satins, and chunky sweater knits.
NB: The weather is changing, which allows for such a diversity of opportunities to outfit for each and every outing. I know I need to include lightweight knits but also great layering jackets and lofty sweaters. I know these girls want to have playful dresses that don’t feel too summer and can be styled with a great biker boot or knee highs.
When did the design process begin for this collection?
NB: Design typically starts about a year in advance. I started concepting color and print direction July 2018 and proceed to sketching and fitting throughout September/October 2018.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
GK: I would say conceptualizing and picking the fabrics is the most fun for me, personally.
NB: Concepting color and print direction is creative chaos. I have swatches, color cards, inspiration images and trinkets scattered on my desk that help pull the entire season’s vibe together. On the other hand, sketching is extremely therapeutic for me. I get to put on my headphones and really embrace my creative flow, literally putting pen to paper, or mouse to computer 😊. Seeing color/print direction and sketches come to fruition is extremely rewarding.
Describe the Fall ’19 collection in 3 words.
GK: Chic, Cozy, Versatile.
NB: Moody, Trendy and Wearable.
Who do you envision wearing this collection?
GK: Hailey Baldwin was one of my muses for designing this season. I like that she’s a little bit quirky but always chic.
NB: I don’t think of one particular girl when designing, but compile many different walks of life. I want the variety of body shapes and sizes, the trend forward girl and the cozy classic girl. I often think “what experiences is she having?” or “what interactions is she making?”.
Which pieces from Fall ’19 are you the most excited to wear?
GK: I can't wait to wear the Teddy Or Not bomber, the Check This Out boyfriend blazer, and the Wild Card leopard printed satin wrap dress.
NB: Definitely excited for the Soft Skills shearling jacket, the Tie On The Prize striped overall, the No Going Back sweater, and the On Duty satin bomber!
What are some of your favorite new trends for Fall '19?
NB: This year I'm really loving animal prints, drop-shoulder oversized jackets, menswear stripes, and lofty shearling jackets.
GK: I'll second the animal print trend, and I'm also feeling the oversized boyfriend blazer trend.
Are there any fall trends you feel are becoming timeless?
GK: Definitely the blazer trend. The blazer is being transformed from a career style jacket to an everyday staple for fall.
NB: Suede mini skirts, any plaid outerwear, and the oversized/boxy sweater trend I think are here to stay.
How does this Fall collection differ from last year?
GK: I would say this year BB Dakota is definitely more fun, more fuzzy, and has more variety of textures.
NB: For Jack, we worked to simplify styles, offering classic renditions in new and fresh fabrics and print/colors. We tweaked these classics to feel current by including more drop-shoulders, especially in outerwear and oversized, slightly cropped, box sweaters.
Any Fall '18 favorites you're bringing back this year?
GK: Everyone just loves the Whiskey Business brushed twill coat. It’s such a great staple outerwear silhouette that goes with anything. So we added a new color in Rouge!
NB: Our leopard fur bomber BLEW OUT last year, so of course we brought it back for all of you that missed it the first time around 😊. We loved our Speak Now shearling jacket, so we brought this back in new colors, including a Camel that I am dying to have in my closet. The Spice of Life patterned sweater was a hit, so we brought this concept back as a cardigan this year. Also our swirl fur cropped vest (Big Softy) had a great response so we tweaked the collar, lengthened it and added new colors!
Are there any new fabrics in this collection you are excited about?
NB: Our lightweight menswear stripes are great this season. I love the play on masculine stripe in feminine silhouettes. Our shearling this season is SO SOFT! I just want to curl up and live in the Soft Skills jacket. Our new floral printed crinkle is amazing, too. Not only is the print completely wearable for Fall but its lightweight and breathable for those transitional hot days (try it in the Bouquet You Stay and Hip to be Square). Lastly, our leopard printed dull satin is incredible and feels so luxurious.
GK: We have really cool new textured vegan leather (see the Moto Finish jacket) and snake printed vegan leather (check out the Wild Life peplum jacket) that I am most excited about. People look to us for affordable faux leather outerwear options, so it's something we always try to stay fresh with.
As a designer, what personal touches/vision do you bring to a collection?
GK: I like to think I bring a little bit of edge to the BB Dakota line.
NB: I really want our Jack collections to be wearable yet make a statement. I am constantly thinking about how comfortable each style will be, while including upcoming trends/colors to keep a fresh, stylish perspective. I work hard to focus on a variety of body shapes and sizes and make sure we include something for everyone. That’s the beauty of a collection! We can still push the brand forward with our trend and color focus but keep fundamentals of great fit, great fabrics and diversity of silhouettes. This is not a “one size fits all” brand and we are proud of it!
