Here at BB Dakota, we're endlessly inspired by women who "do it all", balancing career, family, and self-care seemingly effortlessly, and Susan O'Brien is no exception. You've probably seen her mouth-watering raw, plant-based Hail Merry treats everywhere from Whole Foods to Costco. Galvanized by an introduction to a local raw food chef on the island of Maui, she felt compelled to explore how "clean, fresh, healthy ingredients can provide an indulgent experience". After experimenting with and perfecting her own recipes, Susan launched Hail Merry in 2008 from her home in Dallas, Texas. Scroll on for our Q&A with this boss-babe to know!
What does your typical morning routine look like?
1st a large glass of water, then cold brew coffee (light on the coffee) w/ Moodbelli Cocoa Mushroom Adaptogen tonic & Malk almond milk. I journal & set intentions while I drink my coffee. Lastly before showering I do my stretching, breathing & foam rolling, while either listening to my favorite music or a spiritual podcast.
How would you describe your personal style and what elements of an outfit make you feel most confident & capable?
Hippy chic relaxed style with a definite hint of rebel. In other words, Kate Moss when she is off the clock. I get super excited when I find a unique accessory that inspires me on some personal level of self expression.
What are some self-care practices that help you unwind when work gets hectic?
Sound healing meditation with my own special playlist of classical music. My mind knows the songs so well that it becomes like Vinyasa flow for the mind. We even have a meditation room at work! Also daily spiritual teachings from my favorite thought leaders like: Ekhart Tolle, Thomas Merton, Wayne Dyer. Third, I love learning about astronomy and the universe. It’s good for relieving stress, and puts things deeply into perspective (ps. Neil DeGrasse Tyson was my astronomy professor in college).
Any tips for balancing family life and your career?
It is really important to me that I eat breakfast every morning during the work week with my kids and husband. Looking my kids in the eye and checking in with them emotionally to make sure they are ready for the day ahead, and most importantly kissing my husband goodbye and living in gratitude for my marriage.
Reading anything good right now?
My absolute favorite book right now is by Tim Ferris, called Tools Of Titans. So many tools and tips for making smart, well guided business decisions.
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice before you started your company?
Own your power and do not give it away.
